The mission of the Yellowstone Art Museum is to exhibit, interpret, and collect art, with an emphasis on Montana and surrounding regions, for the education, inspiration, and enjoyment of all. The YAM opened in 1964 in the former Yellowstone County Jail, and an expanded 37,000-sq.-ft. museum opened in 1998. The Museum offers as many as twelve temporary exhibitions annually, and its acclaimed art education program serves Montana and northern Wyoming. Billings is Montana's largest city with a population of over 100,000. The YAM serves 45,000 people annually through on-site and outreach programming.
